The text is the result of research and didactic activities in the context of urban planning courses held by the author at the university of Florence. It is to be considered as an aid in the study of urban phenomena, as a research tool and as an opportunity to arouse interest in urban planning operators towards a global approach to the problems of urban design. The text, preceded by an introductory essay by Antonio Acuto, examines the historical aspects from the development of railways in the nineteenth century to the consequences of changes in the current territorial and urban structures and the more properly architectural and qualitative aspects, tracing a concise history of the architecture of stations and of the impact in terms of renewing the city's image. The contents investigate urban planning issues, analysing the urban design options currently adopted to reduce functional conflicts and to mutually enhance railway and city facilities.
