The volume is the result of the creation of a database on the companies and their characteristics and illustrates the development path of the Arezzo goldsmith system. This is a case particularly significant for its international prestige and for the use of highly specialised workforce and represents at the same time an interesting typology, as it is an emerging district form born by budding from a large company. The analysis represents a deepening of the districtisation process and a methodological support for further investigations. But it is also a tool for understanding the long-term economic dynamics that have characterised one of the most vital productive areas of Tuscany.

LUCIANA LAZZERETTI is full professor of Economics and Business Management at the Department of Economics of the University of Florence; she is also scientific coordinator of the PhD in Economics and Management of Enterprises and Local Systems. She has published numerous contributions on the competitive analysis of local sectors and systems and is the author, among other things, of: Competizione evolutiva. Due studi sulla dinamica competitiva interna della popolazione alberghiera fiorentina dal 1940 al 1997 (1999 - "Evolutionary competition. Two studies on the internal competitive dynamics of the Florentine hotel population from 1940 to 1997"); with D. Storai she published Il distretto come comunità di popolazioni organizzative. Il caso Prato (1999 - "The district as a community of organizational populations. The case of Prato"); with T. Cinti La valorizzazione economica del patrimonio artistico delle città d'arte: il restauro artistico a Firenze (2001 - "The economic enhancement of the artistic heritage of the cities of art: the artistic restoration in Florence"). In this work she directed a group of economic statisticians: Chiara Perugini, Simona Scartoni and Elisa Terchi.
