History

The interest of Florence University in digital publishing dates back to 2000, when an experimental project was launched within the University Library System. The success of this initiative generated the foundation of Firenze University Press (FUP) through the decree of the Vice-Chancellor no. 232 dated 15 May 2003.

In the following year, FUP was transformed into the Publishing Centre of the University, consolidating its role as the official publisher of the University of Florence. This ensures on the one hand a prestigious added value for the published material, while on the other acting as a quality guarantee for the entire production.

FUP, in the front line in the ongoing quest for excellence and technological innovation, has grasped the importance for a publisher addressing the third millennium of not restricting itself merely to the production and distribution of contents, but also investing in their conservation. Long-term archiving is in fact increasingly shifting towards electronic formats.

In 2007 Firenze University Press chaired the conference "L'editoria universitaria tra ricerca e mercato" held at Florence University.
