The acquisition of critical and methodological tools that lead to a refinement of critical capacities is one of the primary aims of a research doctorate. This is why the PhD in English and American Studies of the University of Florence has focused on the mastery of the most advanced critical methods as a lynchpin in the training of the doctoral students, stimulating a comparison between the different methods and trends that characterise the contemporary critical scene. Hence cultural, gender and postcolonial studies, comparative studies and translations are the subject of elaboration and practical application. The result of the year's work of each first and second year doctoral student is an essay, which is supervised by one or two of the Faculty lecturers and is then presented, discussed and approved by the Faculty itself. The book provides evidence of this research work. The climate of collaboration that emerged also made it possible to implement a collective approach to the technical editing of the work. The heterogeneous nature of the subjects dealt with in the individual studies illustrates the freedom of choice of the young academics: the book presents eight essays dealing with theatre, narrative, poetry and autobiographical writing ranging in period from the Renaissance to the modern day. They offer critical perspectives on areas such as the analysis of postmodern rewriting and identity, the postcolonial stance and theories of reception and translation.
