Riccardo Gulli teaches Technical Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering of Bologna. His primary interests concern the sectors of historic construction techniques, building reclamation and architectural design. His scientific activity extends over approximately fifty publications of a national and international character, among which we would mention the following monographs: Bóvedas tabicadas. Architettura e Costruzione, 1995; Mètis e Téchne. Gli strumenti del progetto per la manutenzione e il recupero dell'edilizia storica, 2000; La costruzione coesiva. This book explores various aspects of the complex relationship that links the functional principles of a structure to its translation into built form, comprising the laws governing structural rationale and the technical solutions that dictate constructional feasibility. This ought to be considered a crucial subject in the training of engineers, which is all too often conditioned by an approach that segregates knowledge into separate and circumscribed disciplinary ambits. The negative effects of this approach have also led to the progressive transformation of the professional figure of the modern engineer. Originally conceived as the designer of technical solutions, he has now become a specialist inspector of structural performance. Frequently he even appears to be without the critical tools of a knowledge that does not begin and end with models of scientific explanation, but must of necessity be comprised within a broader cultural dimension in which different forms of knowledge live and nourish each other: History, Science and Technology through to the final causes of Architecture.
