This is a textbook for a University course in contemporary history organised in two sections. The first scrutinises events in Europe and the other Continents using a comparative method with in-depth focus on national aspects, bringing out the role of economic resources in the determination of conflicts and political relations. In the second part the Italian question, that has already been set within the general context, is delineated starting from the construction of the State up to today, pursuing the themes of national identity, politics, and the evolution of social rights. This underscores the dialectic between the development of fundamental values and the resistance to change, in both politics and the economy and in society in general.
