This book illustrates how fossils can provide information not only about the anatomy of adults, but also about the life history of individuals at different times in their lives. The transformations occurring during the life of an organism and the mechanisms enabling them, one of the main topics of modern biology, are discussed in a comparative and integrated way, revealing that fossils offer a unique insight into the central ideas of evolution and development.

Marcelo Sánchez

University of Zurich's Paleontological Museum, Switzerland

Marcelo R. Sánchez-Villagra was awarded a PhD at Duke University and later became a Researcher at the Natural History Museum of London. He currently works in Zurich, where he founded the research group for the Evolutionary Morphology and Palaeobiology of Vertebrates. Massimo Delfino graduated in Natural Sciences at the University of Turin and was awarded a PhD in Palaeontology at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He carried out research activities as post-doc and CNR-NATO researcher at the Universities of Florence, Athens (Greece), Barcelona (Spain), Tbilisi (Georgia) and Zurich (Switzerland). He currently works as a researcher at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Turin, and is a visiting researcher at the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology in Barcelona. He is interested in the palaeontology, morphology, systematics and biogeography of amphibians and reptiles. The core of his research are the the contribution of fossils to the phylogeny of crocodiles and the evolution of herpetological populations in Europe and in the Mediterranean area.
