Lettere a Giuseppe Dessí e a Luisa

Con un inedito su I Sogni di Dessí e un’antologia della critica dispersa

  • Alberto Baldi,

The friendship between Gianna Manzini and Giuseppe Dessí, reconstructed in this book thanks to the Alberto Baldi’s research, was born in the mid-1940s, in the context of her collaborations with the magazine "Prosa", and would last until 1974, year of the writer's death. After the two were forced apart, their meetings in Rome, once very frequent, would be replaced by a dense epistolary dialogue, which would later involve their respective partners as well. In her letters, with a tone becoming more and more confidential, Manzini talks to Dessí about illness and death, sometimes alludes to complex family relationships, complains about the difficulty of reconciling literary work with private life, all the while trusting in her friend’s understanding, closeness and discretion, and hoping he would help her decrypt Enrico Falqui’s often difficult personality. The appendix of the letters is properly noted, and contains a singular unpublished piece titled I sogni di Dessí, which Manzini had written for the Almanacco dei sogni, a radio broadcast of the 1960s. The conclusion of this volume is a precious anthology of dispersed criticism, containing reviews and essays about the writer’s works which were collected from newspapers and magazines.

Gianna Manzini (1896-1974) was one of the most significant narrative voices of the 20th century in Italy. She trained in Florence in the Solarian environment, then at the end of the 1930s moved to Rome, where she would live with her partner Enrico Falqui. In addition to important newspaper collaborations and to her commitment to the magazine "Prosa" (founded in 1945), particular notice should be given to her début novel, Tempo innamorato (1928), and to Lettere all'editore (1945), La sparviera (1956, Viareggio Prize), Ritratto in piedi (1971, Campiello Prize).
Alberto Baldi is a PhD student in Languages, Literature and Comparative Culture. He collaborates with the Open Access editorial laboratory of the University of Florence, is a member of the editorial board of the series Biblioteca di Studi di Filologia Moderna (Florence University Press) and part of a research group directed by Anna Dolfi and dealing with the editing, cataloguing and commenting of contemporary texts. He published the correspondence between Giuseppe Dessí and Enrico Falqui (FUP, 2015) and Gianna Manzini's letters to Giuseppe De Robertis and to Emilio and Leonetta Cecchi (SEF, 2019).
