The word “papyrus” indicates both the plant and the resulting material used in ancient times for writing. The volume broadly traces the botanical and ecological characteristics of the plant, with notes on its technological use and its representation in art; it continues with references to writing, the history of the writing medium, papyrus plants and proto-papers, and ends with a reflection on the sustainable use of paper materials and on the differentiation of waste and recycling.

Marina Clauser is Curator of the Botanical Garden Section of the Natural History Museum. She graduated in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florence and has a specialisation in Science and Technique of Medicinal Plants (University of Pisa); she has also been coordinator of projects for the dissemination of scientific culture (funded by MIUR) on trees and shrubs and on adaptive strategies of plants, and carried out research on the monitoring of rare plants of the Archipelago and the Maremma. Paola Lucchesi is a restorer of antique paper and teacher at the Institute for Art and Restoration "Palazzo Spinelli" in Florence. She began her experience of making handmade paper in the mill of the master Francois Lafranca in Switzerland, where she learned the technique of making cotton and linen paper. She organised 4 workshops at the Botanical Garden to make handmade paper from plant residues and recycled paper.
