This volume is intended as an introduction to the study of pre-classical cultures - Minoan, Mycenaean, Cycladic and Cypriot - which developed between the third and first millennium BC in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean basin. The analysis of archaeological evidence linked to material culture and artistic productions together with the study on epigraphic documentation offer a picture of political, economic-social and religious structures hosting phenomena of continuity and deep cultural relations. Even before Greek prehistory, this is the story of a composite reality, which is still far from being fully understood, but which has the charm of the ancient myths and of their ability to expand and interact with other Mediterranean and Near Eastern civilisations.

Giampaolo Graziadio is Professor of Aegean Archaeology and Cypriot Antiquities at the University of Pisa, where he currently holds the position of director of the School of Specialisation in Archaeological Heritage. He has led numerous study missions to Crete and Cyprus. His main research concerns the age of the pit tombs in Greece, the various problems associated with the Mycenaean and Cypriot presences in Italy, the Late Bronze Age materials found at Iasos in Caria and the relations between the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean. He is currently involved in the study of Mycenaean ceramics preserved in Cypriot museums as part of the cultural exchange between the Aegean and Cypriot areas.
Anna Margherita Jasink is Professor of Aegean Civilization at the University of Florence. She is the author of important monographs and numerous scientific articles. Her research approach is scientific and interdisciplinary. She focuses especially on the philology and history of the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean areas, in a time span between the second and the first half of the first millennium BC. The analysis of the written documents - Hittites, neo-Hittites, Minoans, Mycenaeans and Cypriots - is accompanied by a constant attention to archaeological documentation. These are both essential approaches for a historical reconstruction of consistent credibility.
