Maria’s strength of character, the patience and obstinate self-sacrifice mentioned above, began to emerge. As she confessed in a letter: "I have been through some very hard times and the only thing that alleviates the memory of them is that, in spite of everything, I have come through honestly and with my head held high.” More emphatically she also wrote, "First principle: never to let oneself be beaten down by persons or by events.”

Luigi Dei is Rector of the University of Florence. A professor of chemistry and a worldfamous scholar of materials chemistry, he has published numerous scientific articles in international journals. In addition to research, he is also engaged in the communication of science and in writing literary works of a genre he himself has invented and dubbed “science fantasy”, which employs fantasy and imagination to channel the communication of real science. He is also active in the social media, which he considers an important instrument for the transmission of culture and science. He has composed a number of conference-performamnces on science and music as well as a scientific-civilian drama inspired by Primo Levi. He has recently published the volume two of his Rector’s Diary, containing reflections on the concept of University.
